We are proud to announce that we are implementing an environmental management system (EMS) in order that we can understand, influence and reduce the environmental impact of our business activities.

Part of the implementation plan is to communicate our environmental intentions and policy to our customers, suppliers and interested parties - please check out our policy.

All our people are aware of the need to reduce our environmental impact and significance while remaining a profitable company. We have put in place a series of company objectives which we’d be happy to share if you contact us. We will of course be updating this site on a regular basis as our progress develops.

Another win for CRS - now ISO 14001 certificated!

The Company achieve yet another milestone on 17 February in our efforts to champion the cause of the environment and add to the success of industry in this part of Northumberland. Director Mike Storey said 'We are absolutely delighted to receive the award of ISO 14001 status. It's the top accreditation for environmental awareness in business and everyone in the Company has played their part in our success. Many organisations set up what they call a 'Green Team' to champion improvements, but we decided very soon after making our original plans that we wanted each and every member of staff to feel that they were involved. That was about 18 months ago and it couldn't have been a more successful decision.' Some of the improvements CRS have made during this time have included: reducing our waste going to landfill by two-thirds, making sure that whenever possible materials and equipment are returned to use or recycled, and reducing our use of printer ink and paper. We also measure our carbon footprint every month to make sure we are always heading in the right direction. Mike says, 'Without sustainable, healthy communities, we know we won't - long-term - have a healthy, sustainable business.'

We already knew that we were a quality business - now with ISO 9001 accreditation we have had that view endorsed by independent assessment.

Being accredited within 15 months of the date we actively started trading is a tremendous achievement by all within the business. ISO will have a positive effect on the entire Company resulting from the implementation of procedures which will help us meet our mission of being ‘the UK’s leading end-of-life asset management and re-manufacturing Company in commercial refrigeration and the brewing industry generally’.

Training and development are key to the success of our multi-skilled, knowledge based team with an emphasis on quality and we are confident that 2008 will be a significant year in the Company’s growth. We plan to offer a ‘one-stop’ solution to our customers’ needs for state-of-the-art refrigeration and other electrical products.

The ISO recognition doesn’t just affect us as a Company, but also our customers, allowing their confidence in everything we do to grow. It will continue to enable us to become even more focused and drive enhancements to the service we offer. We will continue to look actively at key areas like training and documentation, to guarantee that all ou r standards continue to be stretching and – most importantly - achieved, first time every time. Within the markets we serve, accreditation to ISO 9001 has become an important measure - a code showing that we are willing to adapt to new disciplines in how we carry out our business.

We feel that embarking on the "ISO path" will open up new opportunities across many sectors and will be a great advantage to us as our procedures and practices have improved by leaps and bounds. ISO will help the Company progress in the right direction allowing us to build an even stronger customer base for the future development of the Company. It enables us to move forward positively and confidently, ensuring a stable future for everyone in the business.

ISO underpins our business plans for the future, keeping us on track with all of our goals. The next step for us will be to start working towards ISO 14001, which we hope to achieve in 2009. With many thanks... Our quality management system was achieved with the help of Global Certification and the DRBM Consultancy.

We have always prided ourselves on being a different kind of company, particularly in our core business of end-of-life asset management and metal recovery. During February we will have our first assessment for the environmental accreditation ISO14001, which is much prized by many of the companies with whom we seek to do business.

We are strong supporters of the new Waste Hierarchy, which identifies the priorities we need to follow in the interests of minimising waste. There are five steps that match our philosophy and the way we do business every day:

1. Preventing waste

2. Preparing for re-use

3. Recycling what we can

4. Recovering for energy production

.... and if all else fails

5. Disposing responsibly

Having met our target of sending only 3% to landfill during the course of last year, we are setting ourselves a new target of 1% for 2009/10. We are under no illusions that it will be tough, but as we've always said, "Going green should save you money, not be a cost"
